Corneal Rigid Gas Permeable (Corneal RGP) contact lens is a type of specialty lens that is used to provide vision correction for early stages of Keratoconus (KC). Among difffernt Corneal RGP lenses, Rose K is the most frequently prescribed gas permeable contact lens for keratoconus.
Corneal RGP lens covers the irregular cornea. The lens is customised to suit individual’s corneal shape and rests on the corneal surface which provides good vision for the whole day. However, some patients may feel slight discomfort initially but gradually get used to it after a period of wearing. Patients working in a dusty environment are generally not good candidates for corneal RGP lens because it easily attracts dirt underneath the lenses.
The long term success of corneal RGP lens depends on many factors such as stabilised corneal irregularity and properly fitted lenses. While Corneal RGP lens is able to correct cornea irregularity, young KC patients who are more likely to have progressive condition should consider surgical treatment such as Collagen Cross Linking (CXL) to halt the progression. Scleral lenses may be a better choice when Keratoconus (KC) becomes advanced. Read more about the benefit of Scleral lenses VS Corneal RGP lenses here.
